I was in Riga at TechChill2017 and talked about how to get an investment.

Investors are people too. No good investor invests because of your great metrics. They invest because of emotional reasons. They might say no to you because of non-emotional reasons, though.

  1. Rule #1: be passionate about what you are solving.
  2. Rule #2: explain it so well that they can turn around and explain it too.
  3. Rule #3: don’t be an asshole. People don’t invest in nasty people.
  4. Rule #4: don’t outsource your core competencies.
  5. Rule #5: don’t care so much about top-down market analysis but get raving users.
  6. Rule #6: don’t do a “clone product,” do something unique.

How to run the investment process

  1. Treat it like a marriage. Don’t mass email, stalk, and treat investors like wallets. You want good investors. Bad investors will be toxic later on.
  2. Date many. You won’t meet the best investor on the first date. Practice and be vulnerable and real.
  3. Involve the investors before the invested. Check how happy they are to help out.

Find something you really care about and are uniquely fit or believing to solve it. Do something worthy of you.

Check out the video if you want all the context, swearing, and jokes :)
